Most guests at Trailhead Retreat book for the pool. They end up staying for everything else. Tall Timbers Camp near Hollister, Missouri is the kind of place that surprises you. You show up expecting a weekend of swimming and somewhere to eat dinner, and you find yourself knee-deep in a stocked lake by Saturday morning, playing pickleball after lunch, and doing a sunset golf cart loop through the property before the kids are even ready for bed.
The Pools (Yes, Plural)
Start here because it deserves mention. The outdoor pool is one of the largest in the Midwest, and the indoor pool complex has a waterslide, hot tub, and year-round access. Summer 2026 is bringing a lazy river and a new food and beverage pavilion called Timbers & Taps, which we're genuinely excited about. The pools are guest-exclusive and well-maintained — it doesn't feel like a public rec center. It feels like a resort pool that happens to be steps from a cabin in the woods.
The Fishing Lakes
This one catches people off guard. The property has stocked lakes — bass, bluegill — and it's completely peaceful. We've seen guests who weren't even "fishers" come back the next morning with a pole they borrowed. If you've got kids who are in that phase of wanting to touch and catch everything, this is the move. Bring your own gear or check out what's available on property.
The Trails
The hiking and walking trails wind through actual Ozark terrain — timber, rolling hills, the kind of landscape that makes Missouri feel like more of a hidden gem than it gets credit for. The trails are maintained and range from easy strolls to more of an actual hike depending on how far you want to go. This is one of the best low-key morning activities before the rest of your group wakes up.
Golf Cart + E-Bike Rentals
Renting a golf cart to cruise the property is one of those decisions that sounds small and ends up being the thing everyone talks about. The camp is spread out, and getting around on a cart makes it feel like your own little world. For the more active group, electric bikes are also available through Tall Timbers Rentals (talltimbersrental.com) and are a great way to cover the trails with a little less effort. Kayaks and paddleboards are available for time on the water.
Pickleball and Basketball
The courts are a hit with every group we've seen here — multigenerational families especially. It's easy to start a casual game that turns into two hours. Pickleball has enough of a learning curve to be fun without being frustrating, and the courts are in good shape.
What's Inside the Cabin
Trailhead Retreat has six en-suite bedrooms — two of which are bunk rooms — which makes it work for big families, friend groups, or multiple families traveling together. The arcade games and infinity table mean the kids aren't asking to leave when it rains. The outdoor hot tub and dining setup are where most evenings end up. It has the feel of a luxury property but without the stuffiness — you can show up in flip flops and still feel like you're staying somewhere special.
Grab Something from the General Store
The Tall Timbers General Store recently opened on property and does hot breakfast, pastries, and handcrafted coffee drinks in the morning. It's become the easy answer to the "what do we do before everyone is ready" question. Grab your coffee, walk the lake loop, and you're back before anyone else is even awake.

Talking Rocks Cavern — One of Missouri's most impressive cave systems. The guided tour runs about an hour and is genuinely impressive — kids and adults alike. About 20 minutes away.
Dogwood Canyon Nature Park — If your group has any nature lovers, put this on the list. A 10,000-acre wildlife preserve with waterfalls, bison, trout, and incredible scenery. It's about 35 minutes but worth every one of them.
Moonshine Beach — A swimming beach on Table Rock Lake with a sand volleyball court and food. A great half-day option if you want the lake experience without renting a boat. About 15 minutes.
Chateau on the Lake — The nicest dinner option in the area. Lakefront views, good wine list, and the kind of place that feels like an occasion. About 15 minutes and worth making a reservation.
The Big Picture
Branson is close enough for dinner or a show if your group wants it, but the honest truth is that Tall Timbers has enough on property that you never need to leave. That's actually a rare thing in a vacation rental, and it's worth building your trip around rather than treating it as just a place to sleep.
Whether you're planning a family reunion, a large friend group, or a trip where the generations span a few decades, this property has something for everyone. The bunk rooms handle the kids. The hot tub handles the adults. The trails and fishing lakes handle the people who just want to be outside. That's a hard combination to find.
